Martin’s National Campaign Begins
Martin was at Snetterton this weekend to begin his first ever National season. After promising testing with his new team things were looking very promising.
Martin’s Race in his Own Words
Awesome weekend, I really enjoyed that. First weekend racing in the car and it already felt like home. We were fast from the start in testing, showing that the team Dolan boys know their set-ups.
Qualifying Saturday morning was the first time I had ever driven the car with new tyres on. This was made even more tricky with busy track conditions and oil down on the last corner.
Overall we went well, especially as the session was shortened. I managed to get my car on the front row for race 1.
Another first, I had never done a race start in the Van Diemen car, but after good reactions and initial launch the car sprung off the line and got me into the lead. After this I had to drive a defensive race as Rory Smith had strong pace behind me. 10 laps later I brought the car home to take my first win on English soil, also on my debut weekend with the team.
Race 2, staring from pole I got another mega start taking the lead into turn 1. 2 laps in again I was under strong pressure from Rory Smith. Unfortunately I didn’t defend well enough coming out of the chicane and he pulled a move on me on the exit. I gave him racing room as I knew it wasn’t worth the risk of closing the door. I pushed Rory hard to the end but he also had strong pace in the lead – resulting in us both breaking the existing lap record. Rory just beat me by 2 tenths.
Overall a very good weekend’s racing and with no damage sustained. Thanks to all at Team Dolan!
